Frequently Asked Questions About Spay & Neuter Surgeries

For most pet owners, getting the best treatment for a beloved animal companion is important. Pet owners often search for a veterinarian they can trust to provide spay and neuter surgeries. Let’s look at some of the questions that we run into regarding spaying and neutering.

 Spay & Neuter FAQs

What Happens During Surgery?

Surgery removes the reproductive organs, which prevents your cat or dog from being able to have puppies or kittens. This prevents contributing to the rising number of homeless pets in the United States. Spaying surgeries are performed on female pets. Female cats and dogs will have the uterus and other organs removed, which prevents your pet from going into heat and from becoming pregnant.

Neutering surgeries are performed on male cats and dogs. During this surgery, the testicles are removed. This prevents your pet from being able to impregnate another animal. It can also have certain behavioral benefits for your pet.

Are the Surgeries Safe?

These surgeries are safe for cats and dogs. Spay and neuter surgeries are both routine procedures that are performed in veterinary clinics every day. If you have concerns about the safety of your pet during surgery, you are encouraged to bring them up to our veterinarian during your pet’s exam.

What Are the Benefits of Surgery?

Male and female pets both benefit from surgery. The benefits are often easiest to notice when your pet is an adult and you compare their behaviors to unaltered pets. Male dogs and cats are much less likely to become aggressive when they are neutered. They are also less likely to spray your home in an attempt to mark their territory.

Female dogs and cats have longer, healthier lives when they do not have litters of animals. Plus, they are at a lower risk of cancer associated with the reproductive organs and are less likely to wander in search of a mate.
