Pet Surgery

Common Reasons for Pet Surgery

Most pet surgeries performed by our veterinarian consist of spaying or neutering. Spaying or neutering does more than just reduce overpopulation. There are plenty of health benefits as well. Spayed females are less likely to develop breast or reproductive cancers. Additionally, neutering can control aggressive behavior in males.

Aside from spaying and neutering, there are a few other occasions that could require pet surgery, including:

  • Removing unusual growths, such as cancerous tumors
  • Taking a biopsy to check for malignant growths
  • Eliminating intestinal blockages caused by swallowing a foreign object
  • Repairing broken bones or stitching up wounds after an injury
  • Extracting decayed or damaged teeth

Benefits of Anesthesia During Surgery

Anesthesia ensures that your pet does not feel any discomfort during a procedure. Our veterinarian will administer general anesthesia that produces a light sleep, rather than a local anesthesia that only numbs part of the body. This ensures your pet remains calm and still throughout, while having no lasting memory of the surgery itself.

While under anesthesia, your pet’s vital signs will be carefully monitored by our doctor and attending staff. When administered properly, anesthesia is generally safe and results in few, if any, side effects. Your animal may feel a bit groggy for a few hours following surgery, which is nothing at all to be concerned about.

Surgery Aftercare

Your pet’s care isn’t complete once it is released from our hospital. As with human surgeries, there is a recovery period of anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. The proper care during that time will reduce complications and ensure that your pet gets back to normal as quickly as possible.

It’s imperative that your animal gets plenty of rest. Give your pet a quiet place to retreat, such as a kennel. Take only short potty walks if needed. Avoid strenuous activities until after your follow-up appointment.

You may be given pain medication to help your pet with any discomfort. Follow all dosing instructions and contact our clinic at once if your pet continues to experience extreme pain.
