How to Brush Your Pets Teeth at Home

How to Brush Your Pets' Teeth at Home

At Arbor Ridge Pet Clinic in Fitchburg, we are often asked if brushing a pet's teeth is really necessary. Our answer is an emphatic yes! In fact, in a perfect world, pets should have their teeth brushed daily. But we recommend at least three times-a-week. This helps greatly in keeping damaging tartar and plaque at bay in between their annual pet exam. If you're new to brushing the teeth of cats and dogs, don't worry. We've got you covered with a step-by-step guide to pet tooth brushing.

Pet Dental Care Tips

Before anything, we recommend you start brushing when your pet is a puppy or kitten. It may take a few tries, and that's OK. Don't give up.

1. Purchase a quality pet toothpaste and brush.

2. Choose a quiet time and place to brush.

3. Use a happy, gentle voice.

4. Start by simply rubbing your finger or a cloth over your pet's teeth. Do this a few times, until they're used to it.

5. Introduce the toothpaste on your finger, to let them get used to the taste.

6. Now it's time to try the brush. Put a bit of toothpaste on the brush, and lift your pet's lip. Brush one side in a back-and-forth motion from the back forward. Try to hold the brush at a forty-five-degree angle to reach the gum line. Brush for about 30 seconds. Switch sides and repeat.

7. There's no need to do the inside of the inner portion of the teeth, as your pet's tongue will work away food and bacteria from those areas.

8. Be sure to offer your pet ample praise, head rubs, and a treat for a job well done.

9. Be sure to wash your hands and rinse the toothbrush after you brush your pet's teeth.
